Hello all,
If you haven't heard about the case of Emily Scheck, a cross-country runner at Canisius College in New York, I'll give you a rundown. So her parents discovered that she is a lesbian and mandated that she come home to undergo conversion therapy, which per the 2018 state of the secular states, a report on the status of separation of church and government, as well a religious equality. The best part about the mandated conversion therapy, it's illegal for minors and Emily, who is in college, is CLEARLY legally an adult, so her defiance of her parents was as an adult, not a minor. Besides, the parents are legally obligated to support her until she turns 21, meaning when she is a junior. (N.Y. Jud. Court Acts Law § 413) per the Buffalo News, Emily is only 19, meaning the parents are still legally obligated to support her. https://buffalonews.com/2018/11/16/disowned-being-gay-emily-scheck-canisius-ncaa-running-gay-lesbian/
Though her parents apparently termed what they wanted her to attend "counseling" that's just religionese for conversion therapy. Though, and I quote, "Scheck's father, Timothy, told The Buffalo News that there is much more to the story than his daughter is sharing. The family asked her to participate in counseling sessions, but he said that did not mean conversion therapy. The family accepts her sexual orientation, he said.
Scheck disputes her father's account.
Her father said the family wants her to come home so they can work together to heal.
"It's a private family matter," he said. 'We love our daughter. We accept Emily.'"
In reality, the events likely unfolded like this, per The Buffalo News, "Scheck, a marketing major, said she was always close with her family until her mother saw the pictures of her daughter and girlfriend in August. This launched a flurry of text messages, none of which changed Scheck's steadfast determination to remain at Canisius. Her mother sent her a text that read, 'Well, I am done with you. As of right now, declare yourself independent. You are on your own. Please don’t contact us or your siblings.'
When Scheck asked her mother why she would do this, she said her mother texted back, 'Because you disgust me.'"
The "Because you disgust me" so blatantly contradicts the family's account, it's more plausible the version that Emily gives is the true event, especially based on the text from her mother I just quoted.
As a result, I personally think that Ms. Scheck should file a lawsuit against her family at a point where she is financially stable, OR the State of New York should charge the Scheck family if possible.
